It’s no news that the Nigerian Fashion Industry is progressively growing and this has rubbed off positively on the styling of our music videos across the country. Here’s STYLJUNKI’s list of 12 Stylish Videos in 2012.
This list has been compiled to appreciate every element of fashion (design, styling, makeup, photography etc) that was put together for the creation of these music videos. This list is also compiled in no particular order.
(1) Baddest Boy – E.M.E ft Wizkid, Skales, BankyW
The first video off EME’s Empire State of Mind Album can be described in one word, ‘Fabulous’. Every member of the crew was on point in every scene. From Niyola’s bodycon dress to Skales Denim Jacket with the Ankara Print, all the way to Banky W’s houndstooth pants (when he got out of his car) and Ray Ban shades. Why wouldn’t you want to be a bad boy?
(2) Good Morning – Brymo
From the moment I heard this song, I had an idea for what the video should look like. And I must say, this video beat my idea by miles. Brymo looks dapper in a black tux and polka dot bow tie. I particularly love the fact that the video had three basic colours; black, white and red. Very classy, very mature. And the ‘omoge’ looks really beautiful in white night gown, and thank God they didn’t make her wear make-up to a ‘Good Morning’ song.
(3) Like To Party – Burna Boy
This song is what is considered to be Burna Boy’s breakout song and lots of people attribute it to this awesome video. The colour theme and the scene’s, the many colourful outfits made it look so cool. It’s very difficult to play with so many colours and not look trashy. We particularly love Burna Boy’s Flower Print satin shirt. It fit the theme of the song perfectlyand he killed the look.
(4) Confam – Black Magic ft. Sasha P
Black Magic’s Confam video is a direct representation of the Black Magic brand. He’s popular for wearing ankara print pants and it seems the Stylist for this video was working with that in mind. Prints were everywhere and yet subtle at the same time. Just enough to give the video the needed colour. We particularly love Lynxx’s Zara Print Tee and the Aztec Print skirt worn by the leading lady. And err.., did you notice that the party cups were in print too.
(5) Sisi Eko – Darey ft. Flavour
These two men will look good in anything. Their physique makes looking good seem easy. We love the fact that they made the effort regardless. Darey’s pocket square was just perfect to pull off the look with the print pants and the waist coat. The orange belt by the leading lady was also on point. Simple and nicely executed.
(6) Feel Alright – Davido ft. Ice Prince
I promise you, this is not a music video. It is a fashion shoot that just ended up being a music video. The first thing I noticed was the Louis Vuitton Bag sitting on the chest in the bedroom. And then the leading lady’s necklace, Ice Prince’s Purple Velvet Tassled Loafers, Davido’s pants, Davido’s Rolex, and Ice Prince’s watch (looks like a Rolex), the purple telephone receiver. Well, from the guy who wore a Rolex in each hand in his ‘All of You’ video, Can we expect anything less? The dresses, the jewelry the shoes and the set of the video was absolutely fabulous.
(7) Fine Fine Lady – Lynxxx ft. Wizkid
At a Nigerian wedding, the thing that matters the most, fashion wise, is the bride’s wedding gown. We’re certain this wedding gown made young girls wanna get married and married women wanna get re-married. Weddings by MAI did justice to the gown. Every other thing was amazing, Lynxx blazer with the purple pocket square detail, Lynxx’s tux. The native attires were on point. Felt like a real wedding reception. Very nice.
(8) Ife Wa Gbona – Tiwa Savage ft. Leo Wonder
The famous picture of Tiwa Savage wearing the ‘All Back’ hair style was pulled from this wonderful video. The stylist worked with the theme perfectly. The song told a story, but the outfits helped to make the story believable. Leo Wonder’s traditional attire was awesome. The wonderful print sequin gown worn by Tiwa at the end was fab. The old school theme was well interpreted in this one, it’s almost flawless.
(9) Ihe Neme – Tuface Idibia
It’s always nice to see music video girls dressed like models. Some shots in this video did justice to that. The anakara blazers were ‘amazeballs’ not leaving out the umbrellas. Looked like a fashion ad campaign at some point. And Mr Idibia always looks clean in his shades. His wearing Paul Smith in this (I think).
(10) More – Ice Prince
Ice Prince Zamani is definitely in the running for best urban celebrity fashionista. Elevated Mindz is the Fashion Label owned by the Nigerian Painter Ehigie and poupular for Urban Wear. The label has been endorsed by major players in entertainment (the list includes Big Sean, D’Banj, Tu Face, Wizkid etc). I don’t think I’ve seen anyone rock Elevated Mindz as good as Ice Prince rocks them in this video. The Leopard Print Hooded Top and the T-Shirt are nothing short of ‘FABULOUS’. We also noticed his Rolex and the leading lady’s yellow print satin top at the end. Please give me some more (literally).
(11) Oliver Twist – D’Banj
The circus theme and the ringmaser look D’Banj was put in was cool. Every look was pulled off really nice. The Circus Ringmaster Look, the red leather jacket and the shades. The fitting, the style were all amazing. And of course, what other way to show how stylish you are if you are not showing the world you sip on the finest champagne in your spare time. (Armand de Brignac, colloquially Ace of Spades in this case). D’Banj was Fab Magazine’s Most Stylish Male Artiste of 2012 and we’re not a bit surprised.
(12) In The Air – Tesh Carter ft. Chidinma
The very cute Chidinma rocks her short hair really well. We particularly love the look the ladies rocked in the car scene. The ankara bow tie and suspenders are gorgeous. The hats were amazing. The stylist did justice to this one. Two ladies in a hip hop video couldn’t have looked any better.
