Sincere apologies that I have been missing in action for few weeks now. Truth is, I have been sort of clueless on what to write *covers face in shame* but I have found a way to make sure it does not happen again and I’ll need your help *battling eyelashes*. If you have any questions about modelling and/or about modelling in nigeria or you have a topic you think I should discuss here on models corner, please feel free to send an email to info@styljunki.com and I will answer all your questions and discuss all topics here.
The casting for Lagos Fashion Design Week was yesterday and thanks to that I have something to talk about. Yes! I was there and I’ll highlight a few things to help some models that are still getting it all wrong
Snap Back To Reality: Now, I know that all your friends have told you how beautiful you are and how you will be the best model in the world. Some will even call you Naomi Campbell and that’s so sweet but don’t go to a casting with all of your friend’s praises in your head and think the judges will definitely share the same idea…cos darling they might not. If you are new to the industry, it is important for you to keep in mind that there are popular models that will most likely get picked. My advice is that you snap back to reality ,train yourself well to make sure you stand out .
The Wrong Look: Go to a casting looking like a christmas tree or with the wrong hair and you won’t even be allowed to even walk especially if the judges mean serious business. I saw girls in multicolored pants and/or tops, very long weaves , weaves that covered their faces and oily faces.
The right look is simple and really easy – form fitted clothes preferably a white/black tanktop(I recently found out white looks better on my dark skin), plain black/blue/brown pants, tights or shorts if you have great legs to show off and COMFORTABLE high-heeled shoes that you can walk in.
For your face, use little or no make-up . By little I mean perfectly shaped/defined eyebrows , apply little foundation if you must and carry white powder along with you or something to take off the excess oil and make your face look clean and fresh.
Also, please no colorful lips, colorful nails and tons of accessories(simple stud earrings will do).
Your hair should be away from your face and if its a really long weave, pack it into a ponytail or a neat bun.
Feeling Out Of Place: At every casting you’ll definitely see models greeting each other and even talking about top jobs they’ve done that you might feel a little out of place. I have been there and i kinda felt lost. Best thing to do is to KEEP CALM *wide grin* and be focused on what you went there to do. Before I started modelling in Nigeria, I made sure I knew a handful of fashion professionals that were doing very well and involved in respectable events so if I went for a casting , I knew the ones I needed to listen to,talk to or learn from if i needed any help. There are models at castings that will talk like they’ve been modelling all over the world and yet they do not know anything. Just stay out of their way. lol
Blaming someone or something- It is easy to blame the fact that you got rejected on something or someone like that you’re not so tall, that they picked the popular ones or you know something else . Well, you might be right but you need to go back and look at yourself because I know not too tall models that get picked every time and its because even I have to admit that their walk is amazing. Also, if you are new to a particular industry then it is no news that you have to come out stronger than those that were there before you. All you need to do is make sure you do not give them a reason to reject you. Make sure you have the right look, the perfect walk(very important) and that extra thing that will make you stand out.
The fashion industry is a funny one. Different groups want different kinds of models so if your look doesn’t work for one casting, it
might work for another. Don’t be discouraged just go for the next casting more prepared
and keep reading all my posts on MODELS CORNER *wide grin*.
