Modelling In Nigeria:how/where to start part 1

Are you interested in becoming a model in Nigeria?? Well, things work slightly(or maybe a bit more than slightly) different here so I hope my posts/tutorials will come in handy.  If you’re ready, let’s BEGIN:

1.  DO A LITTLE RESEARCH: this is the first thing you have to do and a lot of upcoming models miss this part [VERY BAD]. If you wake up one day and decide you want to be in the modelling industry then you should atleast know what it entails. you don’t have to go deep into the research. Just find modelling pictures on the web, read a little about modelling, simply get a general idea on what its all about.

2.  ASK THE PERSON IN THE MIRROR QUESTIONS: Now find a mirror and stand in front of it. Based on your little research and looking at your body in full, ask yourself questions like: do i really want to be a model? why do i want to be a model? would i be able to fit in? do i want to take modelling seriously or do i just want extra cash? . Those are just my suggestions. Feel free to ask the person in the mirror more and after you are done, if you still decide you want to be a model then keep reading this post else you are free to explore other parts of styljunki (now run along )

3.  DO MORE RESEARCH: Hello upcoming model, i know the word research might sound boring (sounds boring to me lol ) but it is highly needed because now that you have decided you want to do this, you simply need to know more. Find out about the various aspects of modelling, try doing a search on these : editorial modelling, commercial modelling, fashion modelling(plus size, runway, etc) and glamour modelling.(you might find more) .Also, find out the requirements for these different types of modelling.

I know I can easily tell you what they all mean but I need you to find out yourselves…DON’T BE LAZY!!

Here in Nigeria, the most popular types are editorial, commercial(billboard and tv ads ) and fashion modelling. There might also be a tiny bit of glamour modelling .

Your research should also include watching runway shows and looking at different modelling pictures(pay attention to their poses).

This research will help you make a decision on which kind of modelling you want to do.

Here are some things I need you to have at the back of your mind[I'll keep adding to this list as we go deeper into our discussion]:

A Model has to be comfortable with her body.

A model has to be confident .

Modelling isn’t all fun and more fun.. it’s hard work and in Nigeria, there’s not that much fun. [yup!! brace yourself ]

A model doesn’t have to be pretty or cute.. if you’ve done your research well, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Well, PART 1 has to end here.. let’s not make this post too long.

Next week, I shall talk about:  what you need to have before you go agency hunting, modelling agencies and being a freelance model  in NIGERIA.

Have any questions within the context of this post? ..feel free to drop it in the comment section and I promise to reply

see you next wednesday.

yours truly,
